"How do you measure a year?  In late nights spent studying, in e-mails, in friendships, in papers written, in cups of coffee? In miles, in yards, in spare tire tubes, or pairs of running shoes? In test strips, in pump reservoirs, in infusion sites? For a collegiate student-athlete with Type 1 diabetes, any of these would suffice. Although diabetes is a huge part of my daily routine, I do not consider it part of my identity, I leave that to the student-athlete part.

Blair Ryan

"I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2000, three days before what was going to be my first high school California State Cross-Country meet. Since then I have run 4 years of high school cross country and track and two years of collegiate cross-country and track at the NCAA Division II level for the University of California San Diego. In 2005, my all women team won the women's division of the 178 mile Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay. We raced again in 2006.  I ran the San Francisco half-marathon in 2005, placing second in my age group. In August '06 I decided I needed to try something new. I stopped running for the university NCAA team and I now compete for UCSD as the President of the Triathlon team. I have raced for UCSD all over California in sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. One week ago my UCSD teammates and I won the overall women's Collegiate National Championship in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

"Although I have been doing elite endurance racing for 8 years, everyday is a new trial and error and I would love to continue to explore new options for improving performance with good blood sugar control, while sharing mine.  I wrote a small section for the book; 487 Tips for Kids With Diabetes, written by Spike and Bo Loy, and published by the American Diabetes Association in 2004. My section is in regard to diabetes management in the Type 1 diabetic distance runner. I have been lucky to have people around me who believe I can do anything despite having diabetes, but I know how important it is to protect new type 1 diabetics from misconceptions about life with diabetes. I maintain a blog of race day blood sugars to help motivate me to record and analyze results with the hope it can expand and be useful to other Type 1 athletes; www.tricontroltrials.com. You can also find updates about my racing with my team at www.ucsdtriathlon.org. I hope my endeavors can resonate for people living with, not dying from this disease."
